About Me

Craig grew up in the West Coast of Scotland where he was actively involved in music from a young age. He first started playing the accordion and fiddle in Strathspey and Reel Societies where he won many solo and group competitions. At school, Craig started lessons in the treble recorder and came first in the 1988 Ayrshire Music Festival Competition in the solo field. He then progressed onto playing the clarinet where he played in both the school and district orchestras. On leaving his secondary school, Craig was awarded the 'First in Music' prize.

Pursuing a career in music, Craig attended Edinburgh Napier University where he studied clarinet with Alison Waller. He then continued his clarinet studies with Linda Merrick (now Principal and Professor at the RNCM, and UK representative for Howarth Clarinets) at the London College of Music and Media where he graduated with BMus (Hons). At LCM, Craig’s first study was clarinet with his second studies being in piano; he also had lessons in flute and saxophone.

On graduating college, Craig secured peripatetic music teaching positions with Croydon and Brent Music Services where he taught individual and whole class music lessons on woodwind instruments as well as teaching at Brent Saturday Morning Music School.

Enjoying whole class teaching, Craig attained a Post Graduate Certificate of Education at the University of East London after which he took up the post of Primary Class Teacher specialising in Music and Maths at schools in Hertfordshire England. In this role, Craig managed music and maths and carried out teacher development sessions in the subjects throughout the academic year.

With almost 20 years teaching experience behind him, Craig has an intuitive teaching style which adapts his teaching to suit his students’ learning styles. As a result, his students have achieved excellent results in their ABRSM exams.

Since 2017, Craig has relocated to Cape Town where he is looking forward to meeting you and helping you progress on your musical journey.
